Allan Leighton steps down as president and deputy chairman at Loblaws , Canada’s largest superstore. Hoping to revive profits, Vicente Trius will replace Leighton at Loblaws later this year.

“We are in the final year of renewal and I am delighted that Vicente Trius will be my successor. I will work to ensure a smooth handover to his leadership,” said Leighton in a release.

This comes after Loblaws reported 8.3% profit loss and the announcement of plans to create Joe Fresh standalone stores.

Vicente Trius has the superstore experience to back his new position. Holding executive retail positions in Europe, including Carrefour and Wal-Mart , he has the knowledge on how to keep Loblaws ahead of the growing chain’s competition. Trius leaves Carrefour as executive in charge of European operations and will join Loblaws in the second half of the year.

“My family and I are excited to move to Canada. I have admired Loblaw Companies for many years and I am proud to become its next president,” said Trius in a statement.

New foreign competitors entering the superstore market, such as Wal-Mart and Target, have Loblaws preparing for the upcoming grocery and supermarket retail struggle. Loblaws recent store expansion to offer more products while also embracing ethnic culture are just a few examples. In 2009 Leighton oversaw Loblaws purchase of T&T, Canada’s largest Asian food retailer.
