What are the chances that a Canadian Pacific train derails the same day the earnings report touts safety multiple times?

Oh, the irony.

There are no reports of injuries coming out of Buckskin, Ontario, a community two hours north of Toronto. Hopefully, Canadian Pacific sees the humor as well.

The train derailment happened at about 3:30 a.m. Preliminary reports said grain and wood had spilled from the derailed cars while another car was carrying propane.

No one was hurt. A few procurement mangers will have to scramble. Canadian Pacific earnings may dip a bit. But other than that, the coincidence does provide some comic relief.

"Fourth quarter saw double digit revenue growth, a continuation of our year-to-date trend," said Fred Green, President and Chief Executive Officer, in the earnings statement.

"We delivered an improvement in our operating ratio by staying focused on three priorities: safety, asset velocity, and productivity. During the year we once again improved our industry leading train safety performance, a great accomplishment while moving a significant increase in volumes."

As crews in Buckskin, Ontario clean up the train derailment, someone at Canadian Pacific headquarters is most likely cleaning up this little public relations snafu.

All too often, an atmosphere of seriousness hangs over the business world, from hitting budgets and consummating deals to controlling brands and human resources.

Perhaps a little brevity and irony can add some air to the atmosphere.
