Greater Toronto area public transportation agency GO-Metrolinx awarded a $4.1 million contract to AECOM for the Strachan Grade Separation project in Toronto. AECOM will provide detailed design, as well as serve as the engineer-of-record for the project.
“The Strachan Avenue Grade Separation is the cornerstone project of GO-Metrolinx’s ambitious Georgetown South expansion program, and is the largest civil engineering contract they have ever awarded,” said Bill Hjelholt, AECOM’s North America director of freight rail.
“This win is a strong reflection of the value AECOM creates for GO-Metrolinx, and enables us to further demonstrate our leadership as they undertake a decade of unprecedented growth.”
The infrastructure project in the Georgetown Rail corridor will accommodate existing and future demands for the Metrolinx commuter rail service between downtown Toronto and Georgetown. The project also promises a new air-rail service between Union Station and Pearson Airport. The corridor includes the GO-owned Weston and Canadian Pacific Galt subdivisions, and is also used by CN and VIA Rail.
Specifically, the project will add five new tracks to the existing three-track corridor, including more than 20 switches to integrate traffic into the Union Station rail corridor. Overall, the Georgetown corridor will be dropped 23 feet, and Strachan Road will be raised ten feet. To do so, a ten-foot diameter combined sewer, two sanitary forcemains and a trunk natural gas main must all be resolved.
AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government.
