Jim Prentice has cashed in his Minister of Environment position for an undoubtedly lucrative banking job with CIBC. So the question arises, ‘when will the conflict of interest revelations start coming to light?’

After nine years in public service, a major decision on two mines in as many days and zero time between jobs, the public will surely question the outgoing Minister’s recent dealings. At this point, speculation reigns, but where there is smoke there is a fire.

According to a CIBC press release, Prentice will be responsible for expanding CIBC's relationships with corporate clients across Canada and abroad, and with providing leadership to CIBC on public policy issues that affect the bank and its clients.

Interestingly, Prentice’s office shot down Taseko Mine’s proposed Prosperity Mine and approved Thompson Creek Metals Company's Mt. Milligan Mine, just two days ago.

Judging by how quickly Prentice took a position with CIBC, talks must have begun more than two days ago between the parties. Which leads many outsiders to wonder, what role if any did negotiations play into the recent decisions regarding the two mines?

CIBC admitted Prentice’s connections made him highly desirable.

"Jim Prentice is a proven leader with strong relationships in the corporate sector and immense public policy expertise," said Gerry McCaughey, President and CEO of CIBC. "He will play an important role as we continue to build CIBC's leading position in the Canadian marketplace. We are very pleased that he will be joining our team."

Rumored to have been Stephen Harper successor, the Conservative Party now has a strong ally at CIBC in Prentice. The more certainly raised eyebrows across Canada on Thursday. Time will tell if Prentice compromised the integrity of cabinet’s powerful operations committee.
