Construction of transportation and telecommunication links should restart.
Ontario Northland and the United Steelworkers TC Local 1976 announced yesterday that they reached a tentative labour agreement.
The tentative agreement covers two collective agreements and more than 115 of the USW TC Local 1976 unionized employees working as customer service sales agents, rail traffic controllers, locomotive engineers and conductors.
"We are very pleased to have reached a tentative settlement with employees represented by the United Steelworkers union," said Corina Moore, Chief Operating Officer and lead negotiator.
"We view this as an example of labour and management working together for the benefit of Ontario Northland and all of Northeastern Ontario."
USW TC Local 1976 represents members who live and work throughout Ontario Northland's Northeastern Ontario service territory, including in the communities of Moosonee, Hearst, Cochrane, Timmins, Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Englehart, New Liskeard and North Bay.
"It's an excellent agreement," said Ron Marleau, VP of District 6 for TC Local 1976 of the United Steelworkers.
“This four year deal provides stability and security for our members."
Details of the four year contracts will be presented to the USW TC Local 1976 membership at upcoming ratification meetings. Previous contracts had expired on December 31, 2010.
"This tentative agreement demonstrates the strong commitment of our employees to support the long term success and sustainability of Ontario Northland at a time when the regional economy is extremely difficult," said Paul Goulet, President and CEO of Ontario Northland.
